MASTER MIND Scholarship 2024

Insight:

  • For a master’s program of 60 ECTS, the mobility duration is one academic year, while for a master’s program of 120 ECTS, it extends to two academic years.
  • The incoming student is eligible for a maximum scholarship of €10,000 per academic year, as detailed in the Payment of the scholarship section.
  • If a student completes a one-year Master’s program but does not attain the degree by the end of the 2025 academic year (July or September), the final installment of €1,500 will not be granted. For a two-year Master’s program, a minimum of 54 ECTS must be acquired in the first academic year (2025, July or September) to receive the final €1,500 installment for that year and qualify for the scholarship in the second academic year.   • Exceptions to this rule can only be made by VLUHR in collaboration with the hosting institution and the Department of Education and Training.
  • The host institution may request a tuition fee equal to the lowest rate for students receiving a study grant from the Flemish government, which is €131.50 for the academic year 2024-2025. This rate may experience slight annual increases.
  • Should a student lose the scholarship, full tuition fees must be paid to continue the program without the scholarship.
  • Several scholarships are designated for students from specific countries: Japan (3), Mexico (3), Palestine (2), and the USA (5). These countries hold priority status for the Flemish government.
  • Unclaimed scholarships are awarded to the highest-ranked candidate by the Flemish selection committee.
  • Students are advised not to combine this scholarship with another from the Flemish government or an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
  • After completing the mobility, all students must submit an essay and complete a brief questionnaire about their experience.
  • Each Flemish higher education institution can submit a maximum of 20 applications.

Payment of the scholarship

The scholarship comprises €10,000 for the academic year 2024-2025 and an additional €10,000 for the academic year 2025-2026, provided the application pertains to a two-year Master’s program.

Upon the student’s arrival in Belgium and submission of the registration certificate obtained from the Flemish higher education institution, an initial installment of €4,500 is transferred to a Belgian or European account.

Alternatively, if preferred, a first installment of €2,000 can be transferred to the student’s bank account (whether European or foreign) before the commencement of the academic year. The remaining installment of €2,500 will then be transferred to a Belgian or European account upon arrival in Belgium and submission of the registration certificate.

A second installment of €4,000 is disbursed in February 2025 upon the successful completion of the first semester.

The final installment of €1,500 is provided upon the completion of the first academic year in July 2025, or in September/October 2025 in the case of re-sit examinations. However, if a student completes a one-year Master’s program but fails to obtain the Master’s degree by the end of the academic year in July 2025, or in September 2025 for re-sit examinations, the final installment of €1,500 will not be granted.

For a two-year Master’s Program, and contingent on acquiring at least 54 ECTS in the first academic year, €4,500 is transferred to the student’s bank account before the start of the second academic year 2025-2026 (or in September/October 2025 for re-sit examinations).

A second installment of €4,000 is transferred in February 2026 upon the successful completion of the first semester of the second academic year.

The final installment of €1,500 is disbursed upon the completion of the second academic year (in July 2026 or in September/October 2026 for re-sit examinations). However, if a student fails to obtain the Master’s degree at the end of the second year, the final installment of €1,500 will not be awarded.

Should a student enrolled in a two-year Master’s program not attain 54 ECTS by the end of the academic year in July 2025, or in September 2025 for re-sit examinations, the third installment of €1,500 will not be awarded, and the grant for the second year of the Master’s program will not be received.

In the event of discontinuation before the completion of the Master’s program, for which a Master Mind scholarship has been granted by the Flemish Government, the student must refund a portion of the scholarship. For example, if a student only completes part of a one- or two-year Master’s program, they need to refund a portion of the scholarship; for instance, if a student completes only one semester, they can retain the first installment of €4,500.

 

How to apply?

  • STEP 1 Check if you are eligible to apply and if the Flemish institution of your choice participates in the Master Mind Scholarships
  • STEP 2 Submit your application to the host institution
  • STEP 3 The host institution preselects the eligible applications
  • STEP 4 The host institution starts the application procedure for the Master Mind Scholarship by creating your application file in the Mobility-Online application tool
  • STEP 5 You receive an email generated by the Mobility-Online tool notifying you of being preselected for a Master Mind Scholarship
  • STEP 6 You register in the Mobility-Online tool and complete your application file in the Mobility-Online tool before the deadline. Documents to be uploaded:
    • Passport photo
    • International passport or national ID
    • A Curriculum Vitae (including your American GPA out of 4.0 and if applicable your publications, academic awards, previous scholarships, etc.)

    • Transcript of records; if written in a language other than Dutch, French, German or English, a certified translation must be enclosed.
    • English language test results or letter of exemption provided by the host university
    • Letter of motivation written in English
    • Two signed letters of recommendation from professors of your (previous) home university, university of applied sciences (and arts) or recent employer written in English.
    • Copy of acquired diploma(s); if written in a language other than Dutch, French, German or English, a certified translation must be enclosed.
  • STEP 7 The host institution validates and submits the completed application file in the Mobility-Online tool before the deadline of 28th April 2024 23h59 GMT+1. Applications validated submitted after 28th April 2024 23h59 GMT+1 will not be accepted.
